The third Science on Screen of the third series was presented by Sandra Chapman (Professor of Physics at University of Warwick), who chose Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. Sandra described some of the salient features of complex systems, and how emergent properties thereof cannot easily be predicted by examining its constituent parts. This has implications for the overall safety of complex systems: although its constituent parts may be well thought through and fail-safe, the coupling of these parts can be highly nonlinear.
