Together with co-authors (Davide Faranda, Giacomo Masato, Francois Daviaud, Bérengère Dubrulle and Pascal Yiou), Nicholas Moloney and Yuzuru Sato have developed a time series tool to study blocking in mid-latitude atmospheric circulation. This tool is inspired by recent work on the extremal index in dynamical systems, and supports the conjecture that blocked flow is associated with an unstable fixed point of a single basin chaotic attractor, dominated by the westerlies regime.
